August is the month of the year where the city of Edinburgh bursts into life with amazing colour, art, and talent. In the streets of Edinburgh there will be shows, acts, comedies, and much more, at the more important art festival of the world.

The Fringe as it is most lovingly known or Edinburgh Fringe Festival is a celebration of the plays, performances, exhibition and all forms or art. It begins in August for around 3 weeks at the same time as Edinburgh International Festival, the Art Festival, and the International Book Festival.

It all started in 1947 with the Edinburgh International Festival which was by invitation-only event. During one day, eight theatre troupes who weren’t invited came in the scene, arranged performance spaces, and did their performances during the festival. This inspired other artists and groups to the same at the next festival. They did this so often that the “fringe,” was born, whose name comes from the venues on the margins of the original festival. 

Even though it is now not an invitation only event many art groups are now registered in the Fringe Society, so they can be listed in an official program it helps them sell tickets for their performances during the days of the festival.  “The fringe” has on average 3000 shows and more than 32000 performances, including the non-official ones. At the Fringe you can find a wide variety of shows like artistic expression, drama plays, children’s concerts, comedy, dance, opera, musicals, plays, acrobatics displays, workshops, and buskers.

The best way to let people know about your performance is using flyers and posters, showcasing them along the streets and handing them out.
